Environment and Conservation
Civic Exchange seeks to stimulate meaningful debate and increase public engagement and awareness on the interrelated and complex issues surrounding environment and conservation. We aim to highlight the importance of resource sustainability and quality of life through the identification of key issues and possible solutions.
Air, Energy and Climate
Air pollution, energy and climate change are interrelated topics that constitute an important part of Civic Exchange’s research focus.
Sustainable Development, Transport and Planning
Sustainable development is the framework that supports each of our research interests, particularly in relation to transport, planning and energy issues.
Conservation
Conserving and appreciating our natural, cultural and built heritage is vital to the long-term sustainability of the South China Region.

Current Projects
Air, Energy and Ports
Our ongoing air research continues to focus on the need to review and update Hong Kong’s Air Quality Objectives. We will also analyse the impact of air quality on public health in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, and finalise our work with Hong Kong and Beijing scientists to formulate effective control measures to reduce air pollution both during and beyond the 2008 Olympics. We will continue to encourage relevant authorities to effectively coordinate the implementation of strategies to improve air quality in Hong Kong and the PRD, and will work with the power, shipping, logistics and port operation sectors to explore ways to reduce emissions.
Sustainable Development and Climate
Our ongoing research will focus on the development of a climate change policy for Hong Kong, potential impacts of climate change on Hong Kong’s building stock, the most effective ways to improve energy efficiency in Hong Kong and issues involved in the design and operation of a regional emissions trading scheme. We will work with think tanks across Asia through a workshop and collaborative book project designed to push regional and global climate change negotiations forward. We will also be releasing a broader overview paper on sustainability issues in the global environmental context.
